This 3-day, 2-night adventure departs daily from Semera, the capital of Afar Region, and includes key highlights such as the Dallol sulfur springs, Lake Assale salt flats, Erta Ale active volcano, and Lake Afdera.

Day 01 :

Fly Addis Ababa to Semera – Drive to Hamedela & Sunset at Lake Assale

Take a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera, the capital of the Afar Region. Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed by an expert team—including experienced drivers, professional guides, an excellent cook crew, tourism officials, and a police escort—all traveling in high-quality, air- conditioned 4WD vehicles. With all camping gear prepared, begin the drive to Hamedela, the gateway to the Danakil Depression.

In the late afternoon, head to Lake Assale to witness an unforgettable sunset over the salt flats.

Overnight: Open-air camping under the stars in Hamedela, with comfortable beds, mattresses, pillows, clean sheets, and G liters of bottled water provided per person.

Day 02 :

Explore Dallol Crater – Salt Flats – Drive to Erta Ale Volcano

Start before sunrise to visit the surreal Dallol geothermal field, a dazzling palette of acidic springs, sulfur chimneys, and vibrant mineral formations—an extraordinary natural phenomenon unique to this region.

Continue to explore the salt cave formations beneath the Dallol crater before enjoying a scenic picnic breakfast near the site. Then visit Lake Karum for a dip in its dense saltwater pool, followed by an up-close look at traditional salt miners extracting blocks from the vast salt plains.

After returning to Hamedela for lunch and rest, continue driving to the base of Erta Ale, Ethiopia’s most active volcano. Arrive at the summit before nightfall and hike (approx. 30 minutes) to witness the glowing lava lake—an awe-inspiring sight and one of the few continuously active lava lakes on Earth.

Overnight: Open-air camping near the crater with mattresses, pillows, clean bedding, and a peaceful environment.

Day 03 :

Erta Ale – Afdera Salt Lake – Semera – Fly Back to Addis Ababa

Wake up with the sunrise and drive to Lake Afdera, a major salt production hub located 102 meters below sea level. Explore the salt farms, take a short walk along the lake’s edge, and enjoy lunch in town.

In the afternoon, return to Semera and take a late flight back to Addis Ababa—carrying memories of Earth’s most dramatic natural spectacles.
