13 Days Northern Ethiopia Historic Route, Danakil Depression & South Omo Valley Tour

You will be warmly welcomed upon arrival and transferred to your hotel for check-in and refreshment. Begin your exploration of Ethiopia’s capital with a scenic drive to Mount Entoto for panoramic views of the city, then descend to visit the National Museum, home to the famous 3.2 million-year-old fossil “Lucy.” Continue to Holy Trinity Cathedral, an important spiritual landmark built during WWII, followed by a tour of the Ethnographic Museum, formerly Emperor Haile Selassie’s palace. Wrap up your day at Merkato, the largest open-air market in East Africa.

Take a morning flight to Semera, the capital of the Afar Region. From the airport, begin your desert adventure in well-equipped 4WD vehicles with an experienced team including local

guides, a cook crew, police escort, and support staff. Drive to Hamedela, the gateway to the Danakil. In the late afternoon, visit Lake Assale to witness a dramatic sunset over the salt flats.

Overnight: Open-air camping near Hamedela (mattress, pillow, sheets provided; 6L of water per person/day).

Rise before sunrise and venture into the surreal world of Dallol, a geothermal wonder unlike anywhere else on Earth, with its colorful sulfur springs and salt formations. Explore nearby salt cave mountains, then enjoy a picnic breakfast in the open desert. Continue to Lake Karum, where you can float in its hyper-saline waters, and visit traditional salt miners. After lunch, drive to Erta Ale Volcano, Ethiopia’s most active volcano. Begin your evening hike (about 30 minutes) to the summit to observe the active lava lake, then return to camp near the crater rim.

Wake up to a desert sunrise, then drive to Lake Afdera, a surreal salt lake town located 102 meters below sea level. Visit local salt farms, enjoy lunch, and later return to Semera to catch your late afternoon flight back to Addis Ababa.

Fly to the lakeside town of Bahir Dar, known for its natural beauty and ancient monasteries. After check-in, enjoy a boat cruise on Lake Tana, visiting the 14th-century Ura Kidane Mihret Monastery on Zege Peninsula. In the afternoon, visit Tis Isat (Blue Nile Falls)—though flow may be limited due to a nearby dam, the walk and views are still worthwhile.

After breakfast, drive to Gondar (180 km, approx. 3 hours), the former royal capital. Tour theRoyal Enclosure, a UNESCO World Heritage site of medieval castles and palaces. Continue toDebre Birhan Selassie Church, famed for its beautifully painted ceilings, and Qusquam Church.

Embark on a full-day trip to the majestic Simien Mountains (122 km, approx. 3–4 hours), a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site known for its dramatic landscapes and unique wildlife, including Gelada baboons . Take short hikes and enjoy breathtaking viewpoints.

This morning, you’ll board a flight to Lalibela, one of Ethiopia’s most iconic and spiritually significant destinations. After lunch, begin your exploration of the extraordinary 11 rock-hewn churches—often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” Today, you’ll visit the Northwestern Cluster, which includes Bet Medhane Alem (House of the Saviour of the World), Bet Maryam, Bet Meskel, Bet Danaghel, Bet Mikael, and Bet Golgotha. These architectural marvels were carved from solid rock in the 12th century and continue to serve as active places of worship.

In the morning, enjoy a scenic trek back into Lalibela. After lunch, continue your journey through history with a visit to the Southeastern Cluster of churches. This includes Bet Gabriel-Rufael, Bet Merkorios, Bet Lehem (House of Holy Bread), Bet Amanual, and Bet Abba Libanos—each with its own unique history, symbolism, and architectural style. Following your immersive cultural experience, you’ll transfer to the airport for your return flight to Addis Ababa.

Fly south to Jinka, in the heart of the Omo Valley. Upon arrival, drive in modern 4WDs to Turmi,home of the Hamar tribe. Depending on the day, visit a colorful tribal market such as Key Afer or Dimeka (held on Mon, Tue, Thu, or Sat). In the evening, visit a Hamar village to witness traditional daily life.

Overnight: Paradise Lodge, Turmi.

Take a full-day excursion to two unique tribes: the Nyangatom, located across the Omo River and known for lip plugs and elaborate attire, and the Kara (Karo), famous for their decorative body painting and scarification. Spend unhurried time in each village before returning to Turmi.

Start your day early with a drive to Omorate, a remote border town near South Sudan, to visit the Dassanech tribe, pastoralists believed to have Bantu roots. After crossing the Omo River, you’ll witness the community in motion—children feeding goats, women grinding grain, cooking on open fires, and men tending livestock. These early hours offer the most intimate and natural moments of tribal life, ideal for both observation and photography.

After spending ample time in the village, return by road toward Jinka, where you’ll stop for lunchand a short break.

In the afternoon, you’ll set out to visit the nearby Ari people, the largest and most settled ethnic group in the Lower Omo Valley. Surrounded by lush farmlands, the Ari are known for their pottery, blacksmithing, and rich coffee traditions. You’ll walk through their villages from home to home, sharing in local hospitality and sipping freshly roasted coffee while engaging with the community in their day-to-day activities.

Your final day begins early with an excursion through the scenic landscapes of Mago National Park to visit the Mursi people, one of the most iconic tribes of the Omo Valley. The Mursi are renowned for their striking cultural expressions, including lip and ear plates, body painting, and ritual scarification, all of which carry deep social and symbolic meaning—used for beauty,

status, and even silent communication across tribal lines.

After spending unhurried time in the village, return to Jinka for your flight back to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your international flight or hotel, marking the end of your unforgettable cultural expedition through Ethiopia.
