6-Day Omo Valley Tribal Tour: From Arba Minch to Jinka

Upon arrival at Arba Minch Airport, you’ll be greeted by our team and travel in a modern 4WD vehicle equipped with A/C and charging ports. After lodge check-in, begin your adventure with a gentle hike through the lush, shaded forest of Forty Springs, where clear spring water bubbles up from beneath the jungle floor. Enjoy this one-hour nature walk among Anubis baboons, warthogs, Colobus and Vervet monkeys—and take a dip in a natural pool if you’d like.

After lunch, ascend to the highlands to visit the Dorze village in Chencha. Famous for their tall bamboo homes and rich textile traditions, the Dorze people use handmade looms and tools to weave vibrant cotton fabrics. Witness their daily lives and hospitality before returning to Arba Minch for the evening.

After breakfast, embark on a boat safari on Lake Chamo, famous for its massive Nile crocodiles, pods of hippos, and rich birdlife. Glide past sunbathing crocs and waterside wildlife as you enjoy the peaceful lake atmosphere.

Then drive to Konso, a highland town known for its fortified villages, ancient stone terraces, and unique funerary sculptures called waka. After check-in and lunch, visit the village in the afternoon. Meet this resilient people whose sophisticated agricultural techniques have earned them UNESCO World Heritage recognition. You’ll also explore the surreal landscape of the “Konso New York,” a natural formation of eroded hoodoos resembling a city skyline.

Highlights: Arbore beadwork & attire, Hamar village visit, ochre hairstyles

In the morning, head south to the Arbore tribe, a pastoralist community living in one of the most

arid and sun-baked regions of the Omo Valley. Admire the women’s traditional skin skirts, layered bead jewelry, and intricate hairstyles, while men wear simple white cloth wraps. After an immersive village experience, continue on to Turmi.

After lunch and rest, visit a Hamar village, where you’ll witness authentic daily life scenes— grinding grain, tending goats, preparing food—and learn about their unique cultural practices. The Hamar are especially known for their red ochre-dyed braids, beaded jewelry, and welcoming spirit. We stay as long as needed before returning to Turmi.

Highlights: Nyangatom lip plugs, Karo body painting, Omo River views

Drive through remote lands to visit the Nyangatom tribe, who live near the South Sudanese border. Their decorative culture is striking—men wear ivory lip plugs, women use copper, and girls dress in studded goatskin dresses. Spend time exploring the village and engaging in respectful cultural exchange.

Then continue to Korcho, the most scenic settlement of the Karo people, perched above the Omo River. Famous for their elaborate white body painting and ritual scarification, the Karo offer stunning photographic opportunities and deeply rooted storytelling traditions. After soaking in their riverside culture, return to Turmi.

Highlights: Dassanech tribal life, sunrise village scenes, Ari coffee ceremony

Today begins early as we drive south to Omorate, a remote town near the Kenyan border, to visit the Dassanech tribe. Known for their resilience and adaptability, the Dassanech were once nomadic pastoralists and are now settled along the Omo River. Crossing the Omo bridge at dawn, we aim to arrive while morning activities are still in full motion—children feeding livestock, women milking cows or roasting coffee, and the slow rhythm of village life unfolding naturally.

After spending meaningful time with the community, we return to Turmi and continue the scenic drive north to Jinka. Upon arrival and check-in, we’ll visit the nearby Ari village, located on the green highland plateau surrounding the town. The Ari are known for their pottery, distilling, and traditional beehive-shaped houses. You’ll walk through the village, observe their daily routines, and take part in a traditional coffee ceremony, hosted with genuine warmth by the local families.

Highlights: Mursi lip plates, Mago National Park, tribal photography

Your journey concludes with a drive into Mago National Park to meet the iconic Mursi tribe. Famous for their dramatic clay lip plates and ceremonial body markings, the Mursi have long fascinated visitors. With respectful engagement, you’ll photograph and observe their customs and understand the meaning behind their adornments.

After your visit, return to Jinka for your afternoon flight back to Addis Ababa—leaving with unforgettable memories of Ethiopia’s living traditions, remote beauty, and vibrant cultures.
